Agencies on Aging/Disabilities

  • The Connect Me Ohio website is your first stop for information about home and community based services, support and opportunities for older adults, persons with disabilities and caregivers in Ohio, whether you're looking at options for independent living, long term care alternatives, support to stay in your home or ways to stay healthy.
  • The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging website contains trainings, educational materials, and resources designed to "help older persons and persons with disabilities live with dignity and choices in their homes and communities for as long as possible."
  • The National Center on Senior Transportation website has educational materials and resources designed "to increase transportation options for older adults and enhance their ability to live more independently within their communities throughout the United States."

Government Agencies

  • The Athens County Government website contains over 30 links to government agencies in Athens County, including the Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Children Services, and Job and Family Services. Discover which agencies have programs designed to meet your needs.  
  • The City of Athens website contains information on what developments are taking place in parks and recreation, city planning, engineering and public works, and other areas. The City's "Community Calendar" lets residents know when and where important public meetings are being held.
  • The Nelsonville.net website contains links to local, county, and government agencies in addition to information on local schools, churches, businesses. This site is the place to visit to check on local road conditions, Ohio road conditions, the weather, and more.

Law Enforcement

  • The Athens County 911 Emergency Communications website contains educational information for residents of Athens County about how to use 911 emergency services effectively. The website also includes forms for cell phone users and college students to file so they are easier to locate in an emergency situation.
  • The Athens County Sheriff's Office provides "emergency services, public protection, criminal investigations and any other routine law enforcement services to the citizens of Athens County" in addition to  prisoner transportation, property auctions and court paper services."
  • The Ohio State Highway Patrol website contains information on how to schedule a driving test as well as how to obtain a copy of a crash report or your driving record. In addition the website connects you to the latest report on road conditions from ODOT and your local Highway Patrol Post.  

Medical Education & Services

  • The O'Bleness Memorial Hospital website explains how this private, not for profit, hospital in Athens not only provides healthcare services regardless of a patients' ability to pay but also screens and educates community members to encourage preventative measures. These measures include continued driver safety courses for seniors over age 50.

Planning & Development

  • The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce  facilitates "a strong business climate in Athens County" and assists "member companies in meeting their full potential."
  • The Athens County Regional Planning Commission website contains information about flood plains and flood plain management, a copy of the most recent Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan for Athens County, and information about where and when Commission meetings will be held.
  • The Ohio Department of Transportation website contains information on what's being done in the state of Ohio for Bicycles and Pedestrians, Aviation, Highways, Public Transportation, Rail, Water, and Commercial Transportation. 
  • The Community Transportation Association website contains resources, publications, training information, funding ideas, and more for "transit agencies and advocacy groups focused on increasing operating assistance for transit systems around the nation." 
  • The United We Ride website contains information for those interested in coordinating human service transportation, including assessment and planning tools, mobility management strategies, technical assistance and training, and information on current policies, programs, and available sources of funding.
